What is “Long COVID”?

POST-COVID

Post-COVID, also known as long-COVID, has been described by the CDC as symptoms usually associated with COVID-19 occurring four weeks or longer after the initial infection with SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fever, fatigue, loss of smell or taste, chest or stomach pains, and difficulty concentrating (brain fog). These post-COVID conditions do not only occur in those with severe initial infections. They can also occur in those who have had mild or no symptoms.

CBD AND INFLAMMATION

Many COVID symptoms are like typical flu-like symptoms because these are how we feel during a normal immune response. When battling a virus, we don’t need to produce cytokines that activate our immune system and inflammation.

Research shows that CBD has potent anti-inflammatory effects in a 2015 phase II study examining graft-versus-host disease, in which donor stem cells see the transplant recipient as a foreign body and enact an immunological impact against them. A 2019 study describes CBD’s various avenues to decrease the body’s natural inflammatory responses, such as reducing proinflammatory cytokines.

CBD CLINICAL TRIAL

A phase 2 clinical trial of the CBD oil MediCabilis has recently begun to examine the effect of this oil on the symptoms associated with post-COVID. This year-long study will give further insight into how we can utilize CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects to treat other diseases.
